Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer
  • Spatula
  • Cake decorating tools

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter using a hand mixer or stand mixer on medium speed until it becomes smooth and creamy. This should take about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar to the creamed butter, mixing on low speed to avoid a sugar cloud. Once incorporated, increase the speed to medium and mix until well combined.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt to the mixture. Continue to beat on medium speed until everything is well blended.
  4. To achieve your desired frosting consistency, add heavy whipping cream one tablespoon at a time. Mix on medium speed after each addition until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  5. Give your frosting a taste! Feel free to add more salt or vanilla if you desire a stronger flavor. If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream; if it’s too thin, sprinkle in more powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Ensure your butter is at room temperature for a smooth mix.
  • For a lighter frosting, substitute half the butter with shortening.
  • Chill the frosting slightly before piping for better results.
