Ingredients

For the Filling:
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 cup cabbage shredded
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 4 green onions thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional, for added flavor)
  • wonton wrappers
  • water (for sealing)
  • peanut oil or vegetable oil (for frying)

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Frying pan or deep fryer
  • Tongs or slotted spoon
  • Cutting board and knife

Method

Mastering Chicken Fried Wontons:
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Filling - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, shredded cabbage, chopped onion, sliced green onions, salt, sugar, soy sauce, white pepper, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
  2. Step 2: Assemble the Wontons - Take a wonton wrapper and place about a teaspoon of the filling in the center. Dip your finger in a small bowl of water and moisten the edges of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half to create a triangle, pressing down to seal.
  3. Step 3: Heat the Oil - In a deep frying pan, heat about 2 inches of peanut oil (or vegetable oil) over medium-high heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a small piece of wonton wrapper into the oil; it should sizzle immediately.
  4. Step 4: Fry the Wontons - Carefully add the wontons to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3-5 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  5. Step 5: Drain and Serve - Once cooked, remove the wontons from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Don’t overfill the wontons; a teaspoon of filling is usually perfect to avoid bursting during frying.
  • Keep the oil at a steady temperature to ensure even cooking.
  • Experiment with fillings! You can swap out ground chicken for other proteins.
