Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons milk more as needed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • Stand mixer or hand mixer
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Piping bags and tips (optional)

Method

  1. Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature. Measure out all your ingredients beforehand to streamline the mixing process.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the softened butter. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed until it's light and fluffy, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Gradually sift in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. This helps prevent clumps in your frosting. Mix on low speed to avoid a sugar cloud, then increase to medium speed until well combined.
  4. Add the milk, vanilla extract, and salt to the mixture. Beat on medium speed until the frosting is creamy and smooth. If your frosting is too thick, add more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Give your frosting a taste test! If you want a richer chocolate flavor, feel free to add a bit more cocoa powder. For added sweetness, sprinkle in a touch more powdered sugar.
  6. Now that your Chocolate Buttercream Frosting is ready, it’s time to put it to good use! Spread it on your favorite cakes or pipe it onto cupcakes. Enjoy the compliments that come your way!

Notes

  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Re-whip chilled frosting to restore its creamy texture before using.
  • Freeze frosting for up to three months; thaw and re-whip before using.
