Ingredients

For the Donuts:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate almond milk or regular cow's milk
For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder for the glaze
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream more if needed
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup rainbow sprinkles for garnish

Equipment

  • Donut Pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cooling rack

Method

Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures your donuts bake evenly.
  2. Step 2: Lightly grease your donut pan with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.
  3. Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, dark brown sugar, salt, cocoa powder, and baking powder until well combined.
  4. Step 4: In another bowl, beat the egg and then add in the melted butter, vanilla extract, and milk. Mix until smooth.
  5. Step 5: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay!
  6. Step 6: Using a piping bag or a spoon, fill each cavity of the donut pan about halfway full. This allows room for the donuts to rise.
  7. Step 7: Place the donut pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Step 8: Let the donuts cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  9. Step 9: In a medium bowl, whisk together the confectioners' sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, and a pinch of salt until smooth. If the glaze is too thick, add more cream, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  10. Step 10: Once the donuts are completely cool, dip the tops into the glaze and let any excess drip off.
  11. Step 11: While the glaze is still wet, sprinkle with rainbow sprinkles for that extra pop of color and fun!

Notes

  • Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature for the best results.
  • These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a couple of days.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend.
