Ingredients

For the Dulce de Leche:
  • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • a pinch kosher or sea salt

Equipment

  • Small Saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Jar or container
  • Measuring spoons

Method

Instructions
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Saucepan - Begin by opening the can of sweetened condensed milk. Pour it into a small saucepan.
  2. Step 2: Add Salt - Sprinkle in a pinch of kosher or sea salt. This enhances the flavor and balances the sweetness.
  3. Step 3: Heat the Mixture - Place the saucepan over low to medium heat. Slowly bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent scorching.
  4. Step 4: Stir Constantly - Continue to cook, stirring constantly, for about 30 to 40 minutes. You will notice the color deepening and the mixture thickening as it cooks.
  5. Step 5: Check for Consistency - Once it reaches a golden caramel color and a thick, pourable consistency, remove it from the heat.
  6. Step 6: Cool and Store - Allow the dulce de leche to cool slightly before transferring it to a jar or container. It will thicken further as it cools.

Notes

  • Store dulce de leche in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • If it thickens too much, warm it gently to return to desired consistency.
  • Add spices like cinnamon for seasonal variations.
