Ingredients

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix 15.25-ounce
  • 14 ounces soft or chewy caramel candies unwrapped
  • ½ cup evaporated milk divided
  • ½ cup melted salted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped pecans optional

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • 9x13-inch Baking Pan
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Microwave-safe bowl

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures your brownies bake evenly.
  2. Step 2: Grease your 9x13-inch baking pan with a little butter or cooking spray. This will help the brownies release easily once baked.
  3. Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, combine the German chocolate cake mix, melted salted butter, ¼ cup of evaporated milk, and the all-purpose flour. Mix until everything is well combined. The batter will be thick.
  4. Step 4: Pour half of the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan. Use a spatula to spread it evenly across the bottom.
  5. Step 5: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the unwrapped caramel candies and the remaining ¼ cup of evaporated milk. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Be careful not to overheat it!
  6. Step 6: Once the caramel is melted, pour it over the brownie base in the pan, spreading it evenly.
  7. Step 7: Carefully dollop the remaining brownie batter over the caramel layer. It’s okay if some caramel peeks through; it will create a delicious swirl.
  8. Step 8: If you’re using pecans, sprinkle them on top of the batter, alongside the semi-sweet chocolate chips for extra chocolatey goodness.
  9. Step 9: Bake your brownies in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean (a few moist crumbs are okay).
  10. Step 10: Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Enjoy your Easy Caramel Brownies warm or at room temperature!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try using chocolate cake mix instead of German chocolate.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt on top before baking for a sweet-salty contrast.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to a week.
