Ingredients

For the Sandwich:
  • 2 slices whole wheat bread
  • Mayonnaise as needed (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 slice cheddar cheese
  • Avocado slices (optional)
  • Tomato slices (optional)

Equipment

  • Non-stick skillet
  • Spatula
  • Knife
  • Small bowl

Method

Preparation Steps:
  1. Step 1: Toast the Bread - Begin by toasting your slices of whole wheat bread until they are golden and crisp. You can use a toaster or place them directly in the skillet for a warm, buttery flavor.
  2. Step 2: Cook the Egg - In a non-stick skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once the butter is sizzling, crack the large egg into the skillet. Season it with kosher salt and pepper to taste. Allow the egg to cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until the whites are set but the yolk is still runny, or cook longer if you prefer a firmer yolk.
  3. Step 3: Add the Cheese - Place the slice of cheddar cheese on top of the egg during the last minute of cooking. Cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt perfectly.
  4. Step 4: Assemble the Sandwich - Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of toasted bread, if desired. Carefully transfer the fried egg with melted cheese onto one slice of bread. Top with avocado and tomato slices, if using, then place the second slice of bread on top.
  5. Step 5: Enjoy! - Slice the sandwich in half, if you like, and enjoy your delicious Fried Egg Sandwich warm and fresh!

Notes

  • For a creamier sandwich, consider adding a slice of avocado or a dollop of Greek yogurt.
  • If you love a bit of extra flavor, try adding a sprinkle of your favorite spices to the egg while it cooks.
  • Feel free to experiment with different bread types—whole wheat is just the beginning!
