Ingredients

  • 14 ounces extra-firm tofu drained and pressed
  • 3/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch for crispy crust
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons neutral cooking oil such as avocado or canola

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Frying pan or skillet
  • Spatula
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap tofu in paper towels and place a heavy object on top for 15-30 minutes.
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes, approximately 1-inch pieces.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well.
  4. Add the tofu cubes to the seasoning mixture and gently toss until evenly coated.
  5. Heat 2 to 3 tablespoons of neutral cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
  6. Carefully add the coated tofu cubes to the hot oil in a single layer. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove tofu from the pan and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Store leftover fried tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a hot skillet with oil to maintain crispiness.
  • Press tofu well to avoid sogginess.
  • Experiment with different seasonings for varied flavors.
  • Pair with a dipping sauce for added taste.
