Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 2 inch ginger peeled and sliced
  • 3-4 pieces cinnamon sticks
  • 1 whole nutmeg grated
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 2 teaspoons whole allspice

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Grater
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Coffee maker or French press
  • Mug

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, brown sugar, molasses, sliced ginger, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Allow it to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once the syrup has simmered, remove it from the heat. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the syrup into a heatproof jar or container, discarding the solids. Let the syrup cool to room temperature.
  4. While the syrup cools, brew a cup of your favorite coffee using a coffee maker or French press.
  5. In a large mug, combine 2-4 tablespoons of the gingerbread syrup (to taste) with your brewed coffee. If you prefer a creamier texture, you can add steamed milk or a non-dairy alternative like almond milk.
  6. For an extra touch of holiday cheer, top your Homemade Gingerbread Latte with whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick for stirring.

Notes

  • Store leftover gingerbread syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • Pre-brew coffee and store it in the fridge; reheat before mixing with syrup.
  • Experiment by adding flavors like vanilla or peppermint for a festive twist!
