Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste heaping
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups freshly grated cheddar cheese
  • to taste Salt & pepper

Equipment

  • Large skillet or pot
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Grater
  • Cutting board and knife

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the 1 pound of lean ground beef. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  2. Once the beef is cooked, add the 1/2 chopped onion to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onions become translucent and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the 2 heaping tablespoons of tomato paste, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon chili powder. Mix well to combine and let the mixture cook for an additional 2 minutes to deepen the flavors.
  4. Next, add the 3 cups of beef broth to the skillet. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
  5. Once simmering, stir in the 1 cup of uncooked elbow macaroni. Cover the skillet and let it cook for about 8-10 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid.
  6. Remove the skillet from heat and gently stir in the 2 cups of freshly grated cheddar cheese until melted and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Scoop the Homemade Hamburger Helper into bowls and serve hot. Enjoy the comforting flavors with your loved ones!

Notes

  • Using freshly grated cheese makes a significant difference in taste and texture.
  • Cooking the pasta directly in the beef broth infuses it with flavor.
  • Feel free to adjust the spices to suit your family's taste preferences.
