Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons onion coarsely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons cornichons coarsely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon capers drained
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornichon juice
  • to taste Black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 tablespoon flat-leaf parsley chopped

Equipment

  • Chopping board
  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Start by chopping the onion, cornichons, and parsley into small pieces. The finer you chop them, the better the texture of your tartar sauce will be.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, distilled white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and cornichon juice. Stir with a whisk or spatula until smooth.
  3. Add in the chopped onion, cornichons, capers, and parsley. Mix everything together until well combined.
  4. Finally, add freshly ground black pepper to taste. Remember, you can always adjust the seasonings later if you prefer a bolder flavor.
  5. For the best flavor, let the tartar sauce chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld beautifully.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Consider using Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise for a lighter version.
  • Add dill or chives for an herbal twist.
