Ingredients

For the Meatloaf:
  • 1 cup bread crumbs adds texture and absorbs moisture
  • 1 onion (chopped) provides depth of flavor
  • 2 lbs lean hamburger the main protein source
  • 1/2 cup milk keeps the meatloaf moist
  • 1 tsp salt enhances flavor
  • 1 tsp pepper balances the flavors
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce adds umami richness
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard adds a bit of tanginess
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste for sweetness and depth
  • 2 tsp minced garlic brings wonderful aroma
  • 1 tsp garlic powder doubles down on garlicky goodness
  • 1/2 cup ketchup classic topping that adds sweetness
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar balances acidity from ketchup

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Loaf pan
  • Baking sheet
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your Meatloaf bakes evenly.
  2. Step 2: Chop the onion and mince the garlic. The finer the chop, the more seamlessly they blend into the Meatloaf.
  3. Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground hamburger, chopped onion, minced garlic, bread crumbs, eggs, milk, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, tomato paste, and garlic powder. Mix gently but thoroughly until combined.
  4. Step 4: Transfer the mixture into a loaf pan and shape it into a loaf. Smooth the top for an even bake.
  5. Step 5: In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, and a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce for the glaze.
  6. Step 6: Spread the glaze over the top of the Meatloaf. Place it in the oven and bake for about 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  7. Step 7: Once baked, let the Meatloaf rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Meatloaf can be made ahead of time; just store the mixture in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken for the hamburger.
  • Wrap leftovers tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
