Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup salted butter at room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder scoop and level to measure
  • 3-4 Tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Storage Container

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the unsalted and salted butters. Using an electric mixer, beat them together on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until just incorporated to avoid a sugary cloud.
  3. Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract, increasing the mixer speed to medium-high. Beat until the mixture is smooth and fluffy.
  4. Taste your frosting and adjust the sweetness or chocolate flavor as desired by adding more powdered sugar or cocoa powder.
  5. Use a spatula or piping bag to frost your cakes or cupcakes and enjoy!

Notes

  • Store frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
  • For a lighter frosting, fold in whipped cream after making the buttercream.
  • Add mint extract for a refreshing holiday twist.
