  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced

  • 2 whole green onions, chopped

  • Whisk
  • Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Build Sesame Balsamic Tuna Step by Step
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Marinade. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, dark sesame oil, freshly grated ginger, and granulated white sugar until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is well combined.
  2. Step 2: Marinate the Tuna. Place the tuna steaks in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  3. Step 3: Sauté the Mushrooms. While the tuna is marinating, heat 2 tablespoons of dark sesame oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender and lightly browned. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Step 4: Cook the Tuna. In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Remove the tuna from the marinade, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the tuna steaks in the skillet and sear for about 2-3 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer a more well-done steak.
  5. Step 5: Garnish and Serve. Once the tuna is cooked to your liking, remove it from the skillet and let it rest for a minute. Slice the tuna into thick pieces and serve it over the sautéed mushrooms. Top with chopped cilantro and green onions for a fresh finish.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, ensure that the balsamic vinegar is certified gluten-free.
  • Consider using rice vinegar for a lighter marinade.
  • Substitute sugar with a natural sweetener like honey or agave syrup if desired.
