Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef sirloin thinly sliced
  • 2 cups broccoli florets fresh
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil neutral oil like canola or sunflower
  • 3 cloves garlic minced finely
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce good-quality, low sodium optional
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • cooked rice for serving, jasmine, basmati, or long-grain

Equipment

  • Large skillet or wok
  • Cutting board and sharp knife
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Method

  1. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, cornstarch, sesame oil, and black pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Slice the beef thinly against the grain. Rinse broccoli and cut into bite-sized florets. Mince garlic finely.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add beef slices in a single layer and sear 2 minutes per side until browned but not fully cooked. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add minced garlic and stir 30 seconds until fragrant. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry 3 to 4 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.
  5. Return beef to the pan with broccoli. Pour sauce over and toss to coat. Simmer 2 to 3 minutes until sauce thickens and beef is cooked through.
  6. Serve hot over cooked rice. Optionally, garnish with toasted sesame seeds or sliced green onions.

Notes

  • Use low-sodium soy sauce or tamari to reduce salt.
  • Substitute beef with firm tofu or tempeh for a vegetarian version.
  • Add extra vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas for more nutrition.
  • Leftovers store well refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat gently with a splash of water to loosen sauce.
  • Slice beef thinly against the grain for maximum tenderness.
