For the Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • Pink, blue, and purple food coloring
  • Sprinkles (see note)

Steps to Make Unicorn Cupcakes:
  1. Step 1: Bake the Cupcakes - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare your cupcake batter and fill cupcake liners in a muffin tin. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
  2. Step 2: Make the Frosting - Beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low. Add salt, vanilla, and cream, then beat until fluffy. Adjust consistency as needed.
  3. Step 3: Divide and Color the Frosting - Divide frosting into three bowls and color with food coloring until desired shades are achieved.
  4. Step 4: Prepare the Piping Bags - Fill piping bags with different colored frostings, or use a larger bag for a multi-colored swirl.
  5. Step 5: Frost the Cupcakes - Pipe frosting onto cooled cupcakes, creating swirls. Add sprinkles on top for decoration.
